May 28, 2023 - Pentecost - Wind, Breath, Power and Peace

Pastor Steve made a point of preaching from the pulpit today. "Pentecost." he said, "is a day to preach from the power of the pulpit."

In the sermon we were reminded that this was a harvest festival. We were also reminded about the story of Genesis which was marked by wind (on the face of the water in the beginning) and breath (God breathing life into man).

God's power and peace. There is a marked difference between the First Reading in Acts, which is full of power - wind and flame, and the Gospel reading, where Jesus says to the disciples "peace" to calm their fears. What do we need from God to calm our fears today? A mighty show of strength to prove his power over the forces we are frightened of, or a simple word of assurance "Peace."
