October 22, 2023 - Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost - We Are Witnesses - Debi Stromberg's Reflection - What are the things that are God's Today?

Today Luke 4:14-21 was read for Creator's reflection. The sermon Jesus gives at the synagogue in Nazareth has been special to me for years. A web of associations has built up for me.

Jesus quoting from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah is powerful and has been read many times during special times at Creator. Pastor Nadia used it as a text at Pastor Lenny Duncan's installation.

What constantly draws me in is that Jesus proclaims the scripture has been fulfilled today. There is an urgency and immediacy that can sometimes be lost in Christianity. This scripture, and the testimony of the representatives of the SE Youth Collective who spoke today reminded me this is forgotten at our peril.

The lectionary reading for the Gospel is Matthew 22:15-22. where Jesus says “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And those who are trying to to trick him are amazed. It is an amazing answer because it answers the coin with the emperor's head in two ways. It can be seen that the coin is the emperor's but, in another sense, everything is God's.

Creator has concluded the Priesthood of all Believers series where we talked about civic life and faith. This reflection also culminated and concluded the We Are Witnesses Sundays in a heartfelt way,
