November 30, 2016 - First Wednesday In Advent - Holden Evening Prayer and Choir

Holden Evening Prayer last night.

Jesus Christ you are the light of the world;
the light that no darkness can overcome;
Stay with us now for it is evening,
and the day is almost over,
Let your light scatter the darkness,
and shine within your people here.

Pastor Michelle drew attention to "light" references scattered throughout Holden Evening Prayer tonight.  She held a candle while leading us in the opening to the Service of Light.  Later she preached on the power of the light from a single match when she and Robert were plunged in darkness during a visit to the Oregon Caves.

She preached we currently seem to be living in dark times.

We are still in the midst of what I posted about on Sunday. Tonight I listened to Trump speak in Ohio.  I don't understand the language of our President-elect.  It is discordant and contradictory to me.  He speaks of unity then insults the people who disagree with him.  He makes up his own facts. His jokes are childish to me but the audience seemed to respond when he joked that the media and audience should keep what he was about to say to themselves. “We are going to be announcing him Monday of next week,” Trump said. “Keep it inside the room.”

Then he told the rally “We are going to appoint Mad Dog Mattis as our secretary of defense,” This man who Trump has selected once said, “You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.” and "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

Trump seemed to delight in using the nickname "Mad Dog". There is a reckless machismo energy that Trump wants us to recognize in most of his cabinet selections.

Dylan once wrote:

 Democracy don’t rule the world
 You’d better get that in your head
 This world is ruled by violence
 But I guess that’s better left unsaid
 From Broadway to the Milky Way
 That’s a lot of territory indeed
 And a man’s gonna do what he has to do
 When he’s got a hungry mouth to feed

Between different visions of power in this world, is one more real.  How should they interact with one another?  Does faith in Christ crucified have anything to do with the power Trump is talking about unleashing?
