August 11, 2024 - Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost - Linking Bread and Eternal Life

Pastor Emillie posed a question at the beginning of her sermon, after observing the Gospel reading is part of the Bread of Life discourse. "How do you say the same thing in a different way?"

When Jesus says, "I am the bread of life" he is using a metaphor to express a profound spiritual truth. The statement is obviously part of this larger discourse where Jesus is teaching about the nature of spiritual sustenance and the importance of faith for eternal life.

Pastor Emillie emphasized that bread can be a basic staple of physical life, essential for survival. By calling himself the "bread of life," Jesus indicates what is essential for spiritual life. Just as bread sustains physical life, Jesus sustains spiritual life. She also presented a PowerPoint presentation where different types of bread were highlighted and their importance in various cultures were explained.

Jesus expands the metaphor by saying, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever." Here the idea of bread connects with the concept of eternal life. Eating this bread, metaphorically means that believing and accepting his life's sacrifice, leads to eternal life which links to Communion or the Lord's Supper). In our sacrament, bread represents Jesus' body, broken for the forgiveness of sins. By participating in the Eucharist, believers remember and partake in the spiritual life that Jesus offers.

She quoted Martin Luther about the transformational aspect of communion and how it affirms the community aspect of living a Christian life and related a story about her communion experience with a community she wanted to be part of.

She confirmed the bread she ate was delicious.
