What becomes of the broken-hearted? Tonight Pastor Ray posed this question for those of us who were gathered from the well-known song.
We were asked to ponder this in light of the busyness of the holiday season, To try to mind the people who may feel out of step with that busyness. Particularly during this time there was a powerful invitation coming in his homily and I definitely had the ears to hear their power - a true power of the church.
Pastor Ray reminded us of where we would find Jesus and that he does not abandon the broken among us. Indeed this is also a place, or time, where lasting bonds can be forged. We can take the time to be mindful and understand another's brokenness. We can let them know our empathy in what they are feeling. We can follow their lead rather than the season's busyness. To listen, when we can, to a drumbeat of fear and pain they may be experiencing.
Holden Evening Prayer is called a Service of Light. Light has been central to a number of my mediations and the meanings throughout all the individual services I have participated in. Tonight I thought of lyrics that have stayed with me but I had not previously linked to Holden Evening Prayer until now:
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything (there is a crack in everything)
That's how the light gets in.
Anthem Song by Leonard Cohen
After the service I played the Cohen song at home. I needed to hear this song to capture the odd mix of feelings that came from the service on my drive home. I recognized, then, in the music and words something I was experiencing in this season that I had not recognized before.
And I prayed again for Pastor Ray and the Creator congregation.
